What is a Reserve Deputy Sheriff?

Reserve Deputy Sheriffs are utilized to supplement the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's law enforcement manpower.  Like the Full-time Deputies, Reserve Deputies are professionally trained and duly sworn law enforcement personnel. 

Since Reserve Deputies have the same powers of arrest as Full-time Deputies they are required by law to meet the same hiring, background, medical and psychological standards as Full-time Deputies.

Uniform Reserves perform general law enforcement duties, including crime prevention, investigation, responding to calls, traffic control, and enforcement of laws.

 

Requirements to become a Reserve Deputy:


General Requirements

1. Be a United States Citizen.

2. At the time of appointment, be at least 20 years of age.

3. Be a high school graduate or equivalent.

4. Posses a valid California Class "C" Driver's License or higher.

5. Be gainfully employed or a full time student.

6. Be available to attend the Sheriff's Department Reserve Academy
      North Academy (College of the Canyons)
          Hours and Days; TBA
     South Academy (STARS Center)
             
Hours and Days; TBA

7. Be willing to subscribe to oath of affirmation of allegiance for public employees.

8. Be in good physical condition, free from disease or defects that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the duties of this position.

9. Pass our Background Investigation -
     Undergo a thorough background investigation which includes:
          - Fingerprint search
          - Polygraph examination
          - Psychological examination
     Disqualifying factors include (but are not limited to)
          - Any felony conviction
          - Job related misdemeanor convictions
          - Certain serious traffic convictions or patters of traffic violations.
