Bachelors Degree Requirements

A Bachelor's degree, also known as a Baccalaureate degree, is awarded to students who have successfully completed a four year course of studies. A Bachelor's degree is a prerequisite for further graduate studies.

Students must complete a total of 120 to 132* units of course work, depending on the course of study. This includes the 60 units of lower division credit received from a community college and 60 units of upper division course work from a major college or university. Note that all lower division courses must be fully accredited and transferable to a four year school.

You may take the lower division courses at a four year school, but the tuition is exorbitant compared to a community college.

ONLINE DEGREE PROGRAMS

AMU has also established a book grant so that undergraduate students do not have to purchase their own books or pay for shipping costs, regardless of where they are located. This represents a huge savings for our students. The grant is available to all AMU undergraduate students throughout their degree program, providing the student maintains a 2.0 grade point average.

The Division of Extended Education, in conjunction with the Department of Political Science, offers you an exciting opportunity to get your Master of Science degree in Public Administration in an intensive all-Saturday course format. The program is modeled after Cal State L.A.‘s on-campus MSPA program, which is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA).

Designed for employees of the Los Angeles County Sheriff‘s Department and other professionals, the classes are on Saturdays, from 8:10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break and a 30-minute mid-morning and mid-afternoon coffee break. Classes will be taught at STARS Center in Whittier, CA.

As Cal State L.A. students, program participants will have full access to the University library, online databases, and other resources.

  • GPA of 2.75 or better in the last 90-quarter units of undergraduate degree

Programs can be completed entirely online or can be mixed in a combination of ground based and online formats.

Goals of the Career and Technical Studies Program include:

  • Provide teacher preparation to clear a Designated Subjects CTE Teaching Credential required for K-12, adult education, and some community colleges in preparation for teaching criminal justice and/or law enforcement classes in the public sector
  • Provide professional development for law enforcement officers who currently serve or wish to serve the department in a instructional capacity
    Provide a bridge between law enforcement experience and the broader knowledge an educational degree serves to promote occupational leadership in law enforcement
  • Provide competency-based transferable skills for teaching in areas of critical reasoning, problem solving, clear communication, curriculum development, assessing student progress, and delivery methods/strategies for adult learners
  • Offer a degree program that recognizes subject matter expertise through documentation of work experience in a portfolio for credit toward the BCTS degree
  • Provide a program that respects scholar's life experiences, encourages critical thinking through scholarly debate, and gives candidate ownership of their education through flexible scheduling and asynchronous delivery
  • Up to 90 semester or 120 quarter units of lower division general education course work may be transferred to meet lower division requirements as part of the degree

The Bachelor of Arts in Career and Technical Studies (BCTS) is designed to provide candidates with significant occupational and teaching experience the opportunity to have that experience count as partial credit toward a baccalaureate degree. Applicants must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and five years of work experience and/or education directly related to each subject the candidate teaches.

In order to qualify for a Career and Technical Evaluation of Competency (CTEC), applicant must have at least three years of full-time work experience, and at least 1500 clock hours of teaching experience.

Applicants must be admitted to the university and should take EVOC 335, Introduction to Career and Technical Studies within the first academic year.

Note: Teaching experience includes providing on-the-job training throughout one's professional career as well as classroom platform time.

Chapman University

The Master of Arts program in Criminal Justice prepares students for administrative, research, and teaching positions. It is primarily designed to foster a learning community of criminal justice professionals who will use cutting edge knowledge within law enforcement, correctional and legal arenas. Program graduates will also be prepared for admission to doctoral programs in crime and deviance, and for promotions within existing law enforcement, correctional and legal institutions.

The Master of Arts program in Criminal Justice is committed to the interdisciplinary study of criminal behavior and society‘s response to it. The program welcomes students who work within a criminal justice profession, as well as those who have had little or no previous exposure to the criminal justice system. Columbia College

Columbia College was founded in 1851 in Columbia, Missouri. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The College has more than 35 years of experience working with adult students. Columbia College has more than 30 campuses located throughout the United States and Cuba. Columbia College began an online delivery system of its academic programs in 2000 that has grown to over 700 course sections each 8 weeks.

Columbia College offers degree programs in 8-week sessions which begin five times a year. Students may enroll in two courses during an 8-week session, considered full-time; or take a single course at a time during a session. Sessions begin in August, October, January, March and June. Students can start and stop their academic program as their schedule allows.

Credit is accepted in transfer from other accredited colleges and universities, DANTES, CLEP, Military training, police academy training, and other sources. There are two additional programs available to members of Law Enforcement which allow for credit to be awarded based on training received from attendance at training academies for police or corrections officers. The Partners in Law Enforcement (PiLE) program grants 24 credit hours of course equivalency to students who meet the minimum of 400 hours of police academy and are either currently working in the law enforcement field or who have completed the academy in the past five years or less. Partners in Corrections (PiC) grants 24 semester hours of course equivalency to students who have completed a minimum 275 hours basic training academy and are current in the field or who have completed it in the past five years.

The admissions fee is waived for LASDU employees. The tuition rate at Columbia College is affordable without additional discounts. The tuition for the 2010-2011 academic year for undergraduate online courses is $225.00 per credit hour ($675 per course) and $330.00 per credit hour ($990 per course) for graduate courses. There is also federal financial aid available for those who meet requirements for aid.

Bachelor of General Studies
This degree is designed by the student and academic advisor and integrates coursework from across the curriculum. It is intended for the student who desires a liberal arts and sciences bachelor‘s degree from Columbia College but for whom there is not an appropriate major. Students can build the Bachelor of General Studies around minors if desired.

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
The Bachelor‘s degrees in Business Administration (BA and BS) serve students from a variety of backgrounds. The core curriculum reflects the recommendations of the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Students may earn a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In addition, students may elect majors in accounting, financial services, human resource management, international business, management or marketing. A principle focus of the program is to prepare students for entry-level positions and for advancement in various occupations and professions.

Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration
The Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration degree is designed to permit the pursuit of different professional career goals while integrating the general study of criminal justice and law with other relevant disciplines. A degree in criminal justice administration prepares students for entry-level employment in the field, for promotion and leadership roles, and for graduate study. The program provides an excellent academic foundation for students planning to go on to graduate studies or law school.

Master of Business Administration
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) offers a balance of theory and practice. The mission of the MBA program is to prepare working adults in the early stages of their careers in small or mid-sized organizations with the knowledge, skills, and personal characteristics that will enhance performance in their present occupation, and prepare them for advancement to upper-level management in the future. The MBA program enhances career opportunities in the management of business firms or other formally organized enterprises.

Master of Science in Criminal Justice
The Master of Science in Criminal Justice (MSCJ) degree is designed primarily for practitioners in the field of criminal justice interested in developing and/or enhancing administrative skills. The program is also designed to meet the analytical and theoretical needs of students who will continue with doctoral or law studies. The degree emphasizes four foundational areas; trends in criminal justice, policy development and analysis, research design and ethics in criminal justice.

LASD University students will have an opportunity to enroll in an online Master of Public Administration (MPA) flexible cohort degree program with other law enforcement professionals featuring tuition pricing of $333 per credit.

The MPA program is comprised of 39-42 credits of graduate coursework (13-14 courses). Fall and Spring courses are eight weeks in length and summer courses are six weeks. Semester breaks are included. The entire graduate degree program can be completed in just over two years.

TUITION AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Tuition for LASD University students in the MPA flexible cohort degree program will be fixed at $333 per credit / $999 per course. This represents a savings of over 50% from their standard tuition of $695 per credit / $2,185 per course and results in a total tuition cost of approximately $13,000. Students participating through the LASD academic partnership will not qualify for additional scholarship assistance but may be eligible for need-based financial aid.

The Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership is a practical degree focusing on enhancing skills in critical thinking and problem solving to build confidence in the face of difficult decisions. Students with professional law enforcement experience have the option of completing the degree with a concentration in criminal justice administration.

The Master of Science in Strategic Leadership teaches students to effectively motivate others, establish a team environment to improve their unit, and manage change. The M.S.S.L. can be completed in about 18 months, with no GRE or GMAT scores required for admission.

There are many other benefits to choosing MSU.

  • Spouses of FOP members can also receive a tuition discount toward the online bachelor‘s and master‘s in leadership– 20 percent if the member spouse is currently enrolled in one of MSU‘s leadership programs, or 10 percent if only the nonmember spouse enrolls. Financial aid is available for qualifying students.
  • MSU evaluates previous college courses and qualifying training for credit toward the bachelor‘s in leadership, at no charge. Depending on background and training, students may be able to complete the B.S.O.L. in as little as 18 months.
  • General education and leadership classes are offered online, allowing students to complete coursework on their own time.

Southern Illinois University

Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (SIUC) has offered a regionally accredited Bachelor of Science Degree in Southern California for over thirty years. SIU grants 44 semester hours of FREE transfer credit for law enforcement academies, P.O.S.T., other accredited Administration of Justice courses, and for corresponding work experience. SIU is accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Enrollment with SIU is available to any adult who has completed 14 semester hours of college credit for their occupational training and 2.5 years of corresponding work experience.

At our Riverside, CA location we offer a combination of six weekend classroom courses and six ‗online‘ Independent Study courses. More specifically, we offer the twelve courses that are the ‗major‘ or senior level courses in the degree. These courses are designed to be completed in one year, and at the end of the year students have earned 36 semester hours of credit. The six weekend courses are taught on an alternating weekend format – three weekends, per course, in two months. In the same two month timeframe students complete one online course. Class hours are 8 AM – 3 PM Saturday and Sunday.

SIU does not require an Associates Degree to enroll in our "major" senior level courses.

Union Institute and University is a regionally accredited (North Central Association of Colleges and Schools) private university founded in 1964. Union Institute and University offers both tutorial (distance learning) and on ground models of instruction. Each student is assigned a subject matter expert as their faculty advisor. Faculty is comprised of professors with extensive real world experience. Programs are created and taught by experienced police professionals. Students can enter the program every 8 weeks.

ACCELERATED FORMAT
Students entering the 8 week on ground cohort only meet 5 times over the 8 week period.

DISTANCE LEARNING GENERAL EDUCATION CREDITS
If students meet the prerequisites for admission, students may complete college credit courses for English, Math, Humanities, Natural and Social Sciences taken in a distance and/or online learning format. Students have the option of testing via the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). If a passing score is achieved, they may receive credit for the appropriate courses with no other work required.

WORK EXPERIENCE CREDITS
If students meet the prerequisites, Union Institute and University may award college units toward the completion of a degree based on work experience. For example, a Basic POST Certificate could count as up to 32 units in either a major or elective category. Intermediate and Advanced POST Certified training may make students eligible for up to an additional 30 units. A maximum of 90 units may be transferable to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Management or a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration.

Program Overview

The Master of Science degree program in Criminal Justice is designed to meet the needs of students who are preparing for careers in criminal justice as well as those planning doctoral study. Master‘s training focuses on development of knowledge and skills in the areas of management, administration, theory, and research. The program is located at the nexus of theory and practice to ensure that students are grounded in criminal justice theory, understand the practical implications of theory, and have the ability to perform rudimentary analysis of both theory and practice. The Master of Science program is open to pre-service and in-service applicants, on a part-time basis. The program can be completed full-time in just over one year.

The University of Cincinnati has partnered with LASDU to offer all employees enrolled in the 2-year, online Master of Science in Criminal Justice a $250 book credit for every quarter the student is satisfactorily enrolled in the program. In order to receive the stipend each term, students must be currently employed with the LASD and meet the minimum academic requirements established by the University of Cincinnati Division of Criminal Justice.

The Executive Master of Leadership is a program for leaders and with leaders, who desire personal and professional transformational change. This program is designed to allow you to lead from your core values and to profoundly contribute to your organization and your community.

Program Overview
Applicants for the Executive Master of Leadership degree must possess five or more years of work experience with progressively greater levels of responsibility to be admitted to the program.

Candidates for admission must have earned a bachelor‘s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Exceptions to the minimum GPA requirements may be made when justified by exceptional work experience and letters of recommendation.

Currently, the Core Courses are in a condensed format and meet for 8 days all day Thursday, Friday, Saturday and some Sundays once per month on campus at USC. Elective classes are on campus and may not be offered in a condensed format. The degree can take up to two years to complete.
