Day One

Focus: Principles and ethics

  • JOURNAL REVIEW
    Staff will again check on the effectiveness of journal work and emphasize its importance.
  • PRINCIPLES VS. PREFERENCE
    Students will understand how principles impact their biases and preferences. The integration of principles on effective leadership is introduced for student consideration.

    Exercise: Develop a traditional roll-call or briefing situation. Attempt to develop an effective teaching situation for highly structured groups. Incorporate as much student participation as possible. Show the difference between horse shoe seating and traditional seating.

    One must balance values, perspective, vision, focus, and principles.

  • VISION
    The understanding of long term and short term are discussed. Students will be able to relate the effectiveness of long term changes to their value systems. The demand for positive character traits is identified and discussed for implementation into the value system.

    Exercise: Break out into groups and select group leaders. Let every group know, in advance, that the exercise is competitive and their fellow students will be voting on the winner.

    This portion of the training needs to communicate what is real and what is not. For example, do we compete voluntarily or not? How does this voluntary or non voluntary status affect our behavior. Provide individual feedback for every student.

END OF SESSION FOUR / DAY ONE

 

Day Two

Focus: Perspectives and communications

  • JOURNAL REVIEW
  • PERSPECTIVE OF VALUES
    Law enforcement officials must understand the differences between their personal values and those of a prosecutor.

    Exercise: Students are given ten different cases for a prosecutorial exercise. The cases will vary in complexity and seriousness. The goal of the groups will be to prioritize each case for trial.

  • PERSPECTIVE OF SWORN VS. NON SWORN ETHICAL DILEMMAS
    The student will understand through exploring ethical dilemmas the consequences of varying social perspectives.

    Exercise: Break out and present to each group the ethical problem.

    COMMUNICATION OF VALUES
    Role playing of various "scenarios" is used to demonstrate the proper presentation of personal and organizational values. This will be videotaped for discussion

END OF SESSION FOUR / DAY TWO

 

Day Three

Focus: How other professionals in the field of law enforcement fit into our paradigm.

PERSPECTIVE OF ETHICS
Students will participate in various exercises concerning ethical dilemmas and the consequences from different points of view.

Exercise: Groups are given ethical problems for review and discussion. Group members are to identify stakeholders and the need for balancing the wants (political and social) and the maintenance of integrity.

Group leaders report back to the general group for recommendations. Group leaders are judged for effectiveness.

  • ALTERNATIVES
    The effects of alternatives and critical decision making are highlighted for effective ethical decisions within the scope of the law.

    Exercise: List and name the ethical issues involved. How are these issues answered within the Department culture? List all alternatives regardless of feasibility. Discuss these alternatives for effective solutions. Think Win-Win.

  • CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP VERSUS ABE LINCOLN
    Students will understand the different issues concerning perspective, focus, and flexibility.

    There are eleven handouts for class exercises and homework.

  • CHANGING MANAGERS
    Students will identify leadership traits needed for management change.
