Course Outline - Session Three of Six - 24 hour abbreviated course outline

Day One

Focus: Development and integrity.

  • JOURNAL WORK REVIEWED
    Journal work will be checked for completion and thoughtfulness. Journal work should include development issues.
  • DEVELOPMENT
    The responsibility of leadership and development are highlighted. Various methods of development are identified and reviewed for effectiveness. Fluidity and full understanding of paradigm shifts are presented for student discussion. Experiences of the BEST leaders and the WORST managers will be shared.

    Students will develop 10 minute scenarios and break up into groups to discuss the mind set of the developer and how it pertains to:

    1) Courage
    2) Selflessness
    3) Giving
    4) No reward
    5) Commitment to excellence
    6) Cite department developers

END OF SESSION THREE / DAY ONE

 

Day Two

Focus: The impact of the leader on integrity and ethics

  • JOURNAL WORK
    Staff will ensure that students are completing work and keeping up on their journal work.
  • INTEGRITY AND ETHICS
    Students will understand definitions of integrity, principles, and ethics. These systems and their relationship are identified.

    How do values become corrupt? Incremental destruction of values will be discussed. Should we confess to others or remain silent? Is it now your problem when you see unethical behavior?

  • HOW DOES THE LEADER IMPACT INTEGRITY
    The student will understand his or her leadership abilities by using various methods to influence groups.

    Students will break out into groups to discuss how leaders impact groups. Discussion of gratuities and off-duty relationships will occur. Also discussed will be how supervisors maintain values in the organization.

    How do supervisors, subordinates, and peers impact each other regarding values?

    Three predetermined ethical dilemmas will be presented. Groups will develop separate solutions and determine any similarities.

  • REVIEW AND EVALUATION
    This particular session is quite important. Students will give verbal feedback prior to leaving the class. What was good and what was bad? Other related articles for further reading will be distributed.

END OF SESSION THREE / DAY TWO

 

Day Three

Focus: The power of the Pygmalion

  • THE PYGMALION EFFECT
    Students will define the characteristics/traits of the best and worst leaders. How does confidence and development play a part in the Pygmalion effect?

    Exercise:
    Groups are selected and tasked for specific discussion regarding:

    Helplessness
    Courage
    Long versus short term
    Humility

  • HEROIC VERSUS POST HEROIC
    Students will understand the differences between these varying styles of leadership.

    Exercise: Students will be given assignments to identify and define terms related to heroic issues. The definitions will be listed and evaluated for accuracy.

  • EMPOWERMENT
    Students will understand the true meaning of empowerment and its effect on choice, accountability, and taking responsibility.

    Exercise: After students evaluate and agree on definitions of terms, each student will present a past experience regarding post heroic and heroic models.
