The Sheriff's Youth Foundation was created in 1985, based
upon the belief that crime prevention programs focused on
youth are the key to developing safer communities. The Youth
Foundation received its charitable tax-exempt status (#95-4047797)
from the Internal Revenue Service and California Franchise
Tax Board.
The Foundation's
objective is to increase community safety by fostering self-esteem
and a sense of purpose, assisting youth to find value in themselves,
to feel a sense of direction, and define who they are. The
foundation supports two countywide programs; Success Through
Awareness & Resistance (STAR) Program and the Youth Activity
Leagues (Y.A.L.).
To fulfill
its objective, the Foundation receives its funding from a
mix of public and private contributors. In addition to contributions
from Los Angeles County, the Sheriff's Youth Foundation is
able to fund its many programs through the following sources:
Los Angeles
County Contract Cities
Grants/Foundations
Fund-raising Events
......Benefit Dinner in Spring
......Golf Tournament in Fall
Corporate Sponsorships and in-kind Contributions
Individual Donations
In return for their contributions, donors receive publicity
as sponsors of events.
The Youth
Foundation has a Board of Directors, of which the Sheriff
is president. Members of the Board are business and community
leaders who are dedicated to assisting the Foundation in supporting
and expanding the STAR programs and Youth Activity Leagues.
Less than
ten percent of all monies raised go to cover administrative
costs. Ninety percent of program dollars go directly to serve
Los Angeles County youth.
