On August 2, 2008, Deputy Escalante was preparing to leave for work when he was confronted by armed gang members outside his home. Deputy Escalante identified himself as a Deputy Sheriff and drew his weapon in an attempt to defend himself but was senselessly shot and killed by one of the gang members.
